Obod and the cave
A ruined fortress, a rebuilt church and a room linked to the first Cyrillic book printed among the South Slavs. About 2.5 km from the village, the river itself comes out of a cave.
Leave the river for a few hours and walk up to where its story begins.
Picture Ivan Crnojević’s hunters waiting at the mouth of a cave. Out bursts a giant wild goat, dripping wet. They kill it, and the river pours out of the cave behind it. That is the legend of how the river began. You can still walk to the cave today. More stories like this are in Legends.
The Obod eco-trail is a walking route near the village. It is about 7 km long and takes about 3 hours. Sources give different figures for both, so treat them as a rough guide.

On Obod hill you can see the ruins of Ivan Crnojević’s fortress and the Church of St Nicholas, rebuilt in 1743. There is also a cellar room that tradition links to the printing press, with a marble plaque. You reach Obod on foot.
Obod cave is where the river rises, about 2.5 km south-west of the village, under a hill about 420 m high. A source from 2010 says the cave is free to enter and that you should bring a torch. That is old information, so ask locally first. Find out more on the Obod hill and cave page.
The village lies inside Skadar Lake National Park. For the park’s rules and fees, see the national park page, and check before you go.
April to June and September to October are the most pleasant months for walking. July and August bring crowds and heat. On a summer day, start early, before the heat.
Cycling is also something people do around the village. We do not yet have reliable route details, so we do not describe any routes here. If you ride to Virpazar, remember that the lakeside road is single-lane, so take care. See getting there for road information.
